Toro y Moi and Chromeo Light Up the Night

BERKELEY, CA — Toro y Moi and Chromeo kept the crowd on their feet during their energetic, funk-filled show on Thursday, June 15th. Almost 5,000 filled the historic Greek Theater on the UC Berkeley campus. But students weren't the only ones jumping along to the music, waving their beers in the air. Through the red and purple stage lights, you could see couples and friends of all ages, from 21 to 62.

Chaz Bear, who performs by the name 'Toro y Moi' and Chromeo, an electronic-funk duo consisting of David "Dave 1" Macklovitch and Patrick "P-Thugg" Gemayel, are both credited as leaders in the synth-pop, chillwave, and funk music movement. Chaz along with his four-person band, played almost a two-hour set, performing the entire repertoire of upbeat, pop songs from his most recent album, 'Outer Peace.' Chromeo's set finished well after midnight, the screens of people's phones glistening against the dark twilight. [PHOTOS © ANKITA BHANOT]

Toro y Moi, or Chaz Bear, or Chazwick Bradley Bundick from
South Carolina.

'Toro y Moi' is translated to "the bull and me" from Spanish.

"It’s something that I made up when I was 15 in the car," Chaz
said in an interview of his moniker. "It was pretty much
nonsensical."
